A FLAME THAT IGNITED GENERATIONS: THE STORY OF BASHEER MUSLIYAR
Learn about M.M. Basheer Musliyar, 20th-century Islamic reformer and educator, his visionary leadership, educational reforms, and lasting legacy .
When society was scattered and the spirit of Muslims was shattered, the Almighty God, Allah, would send a reformer (mujaddid) to nurture the community, such as Imam Ghazzali (R) and Imam Shafi (R). As one of these reformers, M.M. Basheer Musliyar emerged as a guiding figure in the 20th century. He began his early studies under the guidance of his father, Valiya Ahmed Kutty, and continued his education at Cherur Government U.P. School, Vengara U.P. School, and later at Kozhikode J.D.J. Islamic School. After completing his dars studies primarily under Kottumal Usthad, he pursued further education at Baqiyath, returning to Kerala with a deep passion for knowledge and an unwavering determination.
Apart from his Islamic studies, Basheer Musliyar possessed a visionary outlook on educational reform. He disagreed with the traditional dars system, which emphasized central religious teachings while neglecting speeches and co-curricular activities. To address this, he reorganized educational methods, blending religious knowledge with practical skills and holistic learning. His forward-thinking approach led to the establishment of two eminent centers of learning — Darul Huda and Rahmaniya — institutions that remain living monuments to his tireless efforts. Eventually, he became the founding president of Chemmad Darul Huda. Even before the formation of the SYS, he had laid the foundation of the union “Irshadul Muslimeen.” It is therefore accurate to say that he was a gifted speaker, activist, preacher, teacher, and planner all at once.
Despite his remarkable achievements, Basheer Musliyar faced numerous obstacles in his life. One significant challenge came from his own father, who was initially reluctant to accept his innovative ideas. His efforts to deliver khutbas in the mother tongue rather than Arabic met with resistance, making his early journey difficult. However, following his father’s passing, he emerged as the undisputed leader of Ahlus Sunnath Wal Jama’ah. Known as the “computer of Samastha,” he became a true reformer, sowing seeds of transformation through unwavering dedication and a clear vision.
M.M. Basheer Musliyar was not merely a reformer in theory; he was a reformer in action. His life exemplified a perfect balance between spiritual depth and administrative excellence. He believed that true scholarship extended beyond classrooms into society, uplifting hearts and enlightening minds. His speeches were simple yet profound, capable of stirring even ordinary listeners. Through his influence, a new academic culture emerged, blending discipline with compassion, tradition with relevance, and religious devotion with social responsibility.
His leadership shone brightly during moments of crisis. Whenever the community faced internal disputes, educational stagnation, or ideological confusion, Basheer Musliyar stepped forward with clarity and firmness. His remarkable foresight enabled him to anticipate the future needs of Kerala’s Muslim community, leading to the establishment of enduring educational and organizational frameworks that continue to benefit thousands today.
Basheer Musliyar’s involvement in Samastha was purposeful and meticulous. His profound knowledge of fiqh, organizational acumen, and attention to detail earned him the title “computer of Samastha,” highlighting both his intellect and precision. Even after his passing, his influence remains alive. The institutions he founded, the students he nurtured, and the vision he instilled stand as living memorials to his legacy. His name lives on not just in history books but in the hearts of those shaped by his wisdom and guidance.
The life of Basheer Musliyar teaches that true reform comes not from power or authority but from sincerity, sacrifice, and a heart committed to the betterment of society. His contributions illuminate the path for future scholars, demonstrating that leadership rooted in faith and humility can transform generations.
