Amir Khusrau: Unstoppable Love for Music

Amir Khusrau is one of the most extraordinary individuals in history when it comes to Indian culture. Amir Khusrau was born in 1253 and belonged to a family of nobility in India at that time. Amir Khusrau not only belonged to one of the most prestigious families in India at that time, but he is also regarded as one of the most prominent poets in Indian history. Amir Khusrau was not only a great poet but a great musician as well, as his love for music knows no bounds in this world and beyond. 

Amir Khusrau was a writer from the era of the Delhi Sultanate. Though he was surrounded by the atmosphere of royalty, he kept his soul very much involved with art and spirituality. Then the encounter with the Sufi saint Hazrat Nizamuddin Auliya turned his life around completely. It was the influence of his spiritual guru that taught him the power of using musical instruments as a means of expressing the concept of love for the Almighty. His songs were nothing but the means of conveying the deeper meaning to the soul. 

Khusrau's contribution to Indian music is invaluable. He helped shape the qawwal form of singing, which is performed even today at Sufi shrines with the same zeal to disseminate the message of love and faithfulness. He helped in shaping the khayal style of singing and introduced quite a few new ragas. Blending Indian classical music with Persian influences, his unique musical style created a fusion of different cultures. That speaks volumes about how interest in music drove him to experiment and innovate without fear of consequences. 

What made Amir Khusrau different was his urge to feel and relate himself to the feelings of common people. He wrote songs in ordinary language so that every person could comprehend and share the feelings of the songs. They spoke about love, separation, joy, and devotion-emotions which belong to mankind, rooted and everlasting. For this reason, his compositions are still alive after hundreds of years. People still sing his songs with the same emotion and respect. 

The passion for music in Amir Khusrau was unblossoming as it was within his heart. Music was a means of expressing his love for God, his teacher, and mankind. His music lives on to this day in the Sufi shrines, concert halls, and cultural events. The life of Amir Khusrau shows that if one's passion is pure and genuine, then despite the passing of centuries, it will not be suppressed and will forever impact mankind positively.
